Personal invitation from Nutracon Botanicals Track Chair, Mary L. Hardy, Medical Director, Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology

As the chair of the Botanicals Track at Nutracon 2010, I would like to personally invite you to attend our afternoon session on Wednesday March 10.

People have been using herbs and spices to promote health and wellness for thousands of years but commercialization in the US has been challenging. Unique opportunities exist in the market today to combine the perspectives of traditional use with modern technology and scientific research. Given the complexities in this market, we have assembled an outstanding group of experts from a wide range of disciplines to address these issues with you.

Challenges arising in sourcing & identifying botanicals, including the documentation of purity and composition, will be discussed by Joe Betz, Ph.D., Director, Dietary Supplements Methods and Reference Materials Program for the Office of Dietary Supplements.

Dr. Ikhlas Khan, professor of pharmacognosy and assistant director of the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi, will address issues raised by FDA inspections in support of new GMP guidelines. As director of the FDA funded research program at the university’s natural products center, he has been involved in training FDA inspectors and so has unique insights to share with you.

To allow you enough time to question these experts (almost an hour), Drs Betz and Khan will be joined by Marilyn Barrett, PhD, President of Pharmacognosy.com, on a panel to discuss claims substantiation, validity and quality of botanical products in the new regulatory climate.

In the afternoon, we will hear from three academic experts how to use the full range of scientific methodology to support product development. Galen Marshall, MD PhD, professor of medicine and pediatrics, and director of the division of clinical immunology and allergy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center will focus on the rewards and risks inherent in investigating the mechanisms underlying the immune and inflammatory responses affected by herbs and spices.

Dr. Roberta Lee, Co-Director of the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at Beth Israel’s Continuum Center for Health and Healing (CCHH) at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, will share her expertise in putting traditional knowledge into a modern context. She worked with traditional practitioners for many years in Micronesia and has learned to take that wisdom into her practice in NYC. She will discuss use of traditional botanicals to affect stress and inflammatory responses.

Finally, we are lucky to have one of the foremost scientists studying the effect of spices on mechanisms of inflammation and carcinogenesis, Dr. Bharat Aggarwal, Professor, Department of Experimental Therapeutics, Division of Cancer Medicine, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center joining us to conclude this session. He will give us an overview of the research in spices and point us towards new areas of opportunity coming on the horizon.

As you can see, we have an outstanding program planned, so I hope you can join us on Wednesday March 10, 2010 in Anaheim at Nutracon 2010.

Global Markets= Great Opportunities (guest post)

From Nena Dockery, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Manager, NATIONAL ENZYME COMPANY

We live in an era in which business opportunities are not limited by geographic region. Currently the market for nutritional supplements is expanding worldwide, and along with it, the desire to profit from those opportunities. But, unfortunately there is more than a language barrier to overcome. Differences in Customs requirements, registration paperwork and marketing regulations all contribute to a process that can be overwhelming. Where are the best markets? What are the first steps a distributor must take in entering an international market? How do you begin the process?

For distributors who desire to enter the International market, probably the most important advice would be to seek out a manufacturer who knows what documentation to send and where to send it; one who has experience in supplying the necessary information to get a product successfully registered and marketed in a timely manner. International product registration can take months, or even years under the best of circumstances. Therefore it is critical that you do your homework and then seek assistance from a manufacturer who knows how to navigate across the regulatory rough waters.

No Badges Mailed & Online Directory = Green Initiatives for SupplyExpo 2010

In our newest greening efforts for SupplyExpo/Expo West 2010 features some big initiatives:

 We will not be printing Buyers’ Guide book this year, instead we will print a much smaller Show Diretory Map. Visited our enhanced website and listings at www.supplyexpo.com/directory. On site you can access all event information at www.supplyexpo.com/mobile for easy use on your PDA

 We will no longer provide badge holders, those little plastic (actually ours were made of biodegradable corn) holders that you slide your badge and business cards into. So this year, you will just have your lanyard and your badge.

 We will not be mailing badges this year! A huge initiative in terms of the perception, but I think attendees and exhibitors alike will find it an easy process, and no one has to worry to remember to bring their badge.

More on badges: last year we moved our central registration, show office, sales office and press room and Global Resource Center to the third floor ballroom of the Anaheim Convention Center. All those resources will be in the ballroom again in 2010, and we have expanded our registration area and made it even easier to register onsite, or to just pick up your badge.

You can also pick up badges in the lobbies of Hall A and Hall E. If you are an exhibitor, we will have registration available in the Halls B/C breezeway near the loading dock. This should make your move-in easy!

How can you make this transition for yourself the easiest? Pre-register today! Go to www.supplyexpo.com/register and your badge will be easily printed out for you when you arrive on site. After you register, visit the Online Buyer’s Guide & Show Directory (www.supplyexpo.com/directory) to create YOUR “Expo Plan” and map out the booths that you want to visit during the show.

We are here to help! Contact us at tradeshows@newhope.com or 1.866.458.4935 to speak with a customer service rep.

See you in Anaheim.

A note from Nutracon….

As the Chair of Nutracon this year, I wanted to let everyone know that the program is essentially finalized with session descriptions complete. The 6 tracks this year have something for just about everyone and were designed to provide exactly that. From New Developments in Botanicals and Extracts to the Mainstreming of Natural Sweeteners, and healthy oils to antioxidant science, (not to mention Healthy Aging and Weight Management) we’ve got important topics, great speakers and more than a little bit of controversy.

For those of you that took in Slim-Slam last year (side by side presentation on the science of selected weight management ingredients) we’ve upped the ante this year and are running Slim-Slam II as well as Brainstorm, an evaluation of brain health/cognition ingredients. So we’ve got trends, cutting edge science, speakers like Dr. Gregory Berns, Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, Jane Brody and Dr. Brian Wansink and discussions on emerging products such as resveratrol and ‘experienced’ ones such as the ‘Future of DHEA’. I know many of you already have registration codes, but for those that don’t, drop me a line. I look forward to seeing you there for what promises to be one of the best Nutracon programs ever.
